Abstract

Year 2014, Volume: 28 Issue: 2, 132 - 140, 31.08.2014

Abstract

Objective: Gender is one of the most significant parameter that have been used in identification for years. Anthropometric measures taken from decayed or disintegrated corpse or corpse pieces are often used in the identification of gender. Especially in mass disasters, characteristic standards of societies that have been constituted before are very important in terms of identification. Even though DNA analysis gives accurate results, after such disasters, we need more practical, reliable and less costly conventional methods. In this study, it is aimed to present special data of Turkish population in gender identification by using hand and wrist measurements. Methods: In the framework of this study, anthropometric Hand Length HL , Hand Breadth HB and Wrist Breadth WB measures were taken with sliding compass from 410 people constituted of 255 males and 155 females. The relationship between gender and hand, wrist measures was analyzed using discriminant function analysis in SPSS 21. Results: The most reliable variables in sex determination from hand measurements were observed as hand breadth 83.4% , wrist breadth 82.9% and hand length 79.3% , respectively. In case of two or three variables combination, 86.6% accuracy level was obtained in sex determination with dual model that hand length and wrist breadth were evaluated together. Conclusion: In conclusion, it was seen that in gender identification, hand and wrist measurements can be used as a conventional method when required.
