Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a method used in various fields to relieve acute pain like contusion, laceration, hematoma, fracture, postoperative pain, etc. and chronic pain like osteoarthritis, phantom limb pain, neuropathic pain syndrome, etc. Especially in recent years, it has been frequently used in the field of dentistry for pain relief during various dental procedures or the treatment of maxillofacial pain caused by various reasons. This review aims to outline analgesic and non analgesic use of TENS on adult and pediatric patients in dentistry. The history of therapeutic electricity, the mechanism of action and types of TENS, administration techniques, indications, and contraindications are also discussed. Moreover, it is aimed to raise awareness about TENS in dentistry and to increase its use.
