Evaluation of Some Biochemical and Hematological Parameters in Experimentally Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract

Diabetes, defined by high blood sugar levels and glycosuria, is characterized by changes in insulin sensitivity, damage to the pancreas, and alterations in lipid and protein metabolism in advanced stages. In this study, 33 male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three groups: control, diabetes, and control+citric acid buffer. Blood samples for glucose control were taken from the rat's tail in all groups on days 0, 3, 6, 9, 16, 23, and 30, and from the heart under anesthesia after 4 weeks. Hematological and biochemical parameters were analyzed from blood and serum samples at the specified time intervals and at the end of the experiment, respectively. While chloride and CK levels decreased in the diabetes group compared to the control group (p<0.05), iron, glucose, urea, ALT, and ALP levels increased in the diabetes group (p<0.05). Compared to the control group, LDH levels decreased significantly in both the diabetes and citric acid groups (p<0.05), and albumin levels increased dramatically in both the diabetes and citric acid groups (p<0.05). Only phosphate levels increased significantly in the citric acid group compared to the control group (p<0.05).Compared to the control group, the increase in GRAN, MON, MPV, PDW, and PLCR levels and the decrease in LMM, PLT, PCT, and PLCC levels were statistically significant (p<0.05) in the diabetes group. In conclusion, liver histopathology should be performed for streptozotocin-induced changes in hepatic activity, and renal histopathology should be performed for changes in renal parameters. In addition to all these, it would be meaningful to evaluate the changes in iron and hepcidin levels to better understand the changes in iron levels better.
