Distribution of Microorganisms That Cause Otitis Externa in Dogs and Determination of Antibiotic Susceptibilities

Abstract

Background/Aim: Otitis externa is the most common ear disease of dogs. Especially, various pathogenic microorganisms are frequently encountered with chronic otitis externa. In this study, it was aimed to determine the microorganism species isolated from various clinical samples, and to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility of these isolates. Materials and Methods: In this study, 22 swab specimens taken from dogs with chronic otitis externa were used. Swabs were first inoculated in 7% Sheep Blood agar, MacConkey agar and Saboraud Dextrose agar plates and the microorganisms that were growth were determined according to conventional methods. Antibiotic susceptibilities were evaluated using Disk diffusion method. Microorganism growth was observed in 22 of the samples. The samples presented 64% single and 36% multiple growth. In the study, Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus sp. 59% was the most common isolate, followed by Pseudomonas sp. 18% , Staphylococcus aureus 9% , Corynebacterium sp. 9% and Streptococcus sp. 5% . The fungal agents isolated from these 22 specimens were Candida sp. 14%, Aspergillus sp. 9% and Trichophyton sp. 5%, respectively. Conclusion: When all bacteria were taken into consideration, antibiotic active substances which can be used successfully in dogs with chronic otitis extern were determined as Penicillin G, Amoxicillin Clavulanic Acid, Gentamicin and Ampicillin Sulbactam, respectively. As a result of our study, it was concluded that the causative agent of chronic otitis externa in dogs was detected at the species level and that the investigation of antibiotic susceptibility was beneficial for treatment effectiveness and prevention of resistance.
