A Multidimensional Investigation of Sight-Reading Performance in String Instrument Education

Abstract

It is known that sight-reading exercises play an important role in the effective implementation of string instrument education, contributing to the development of students' note-reading and musical interpretation skills. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth analysis of the experiences, approaches, and recommendations of faculty members in music education departments at faculties of education in Turkey regarding the sight-reading process in undergraduate string-instrument education. The research employed a phenomenological design, focusing on instructors’ personal experiences and approaches. The study group consisted of 25 faculty members from 14 universities in Turkey who, during the spring semester of 2023–2024, taught string-instrument courses and had offered such courses for at least two semesters. Participants were selected through criterion sampling. Findings indicate that most faculty members consider sight-reading exercises a multifaceted and indispensable component of instruction; however, these activities are generally conducted through individual initiative rather than within a structured curriculum. Furthermore, many instructors rely on in-class études and repertoire instead of specialized materials, while lesson hours devoted to instrumental instruction are often insufficient for sight-reading practice. The study also revealed that students face cognitive, technical, and motivational difficulties in this process.
