INTERNATIONAL TOURISM REVENUES, FOREIGN TRADE AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: DYNAMIC PANEL DATA ANALYSIS

Abstract

The importance given to tourism activities is increasing in terms of their impact on world economies. Tourism contributes to increasing national income and creating new business areas in many countries. In order to achieve economic growth and development, the support given by countries to international tourism is increasing day by day. The foreign currency needs of countries can be met by the tourism sector. These foreign currencies make significant contributions to the production of goods and services, closing balance of payments deficits, and ensuring economic growth and development. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of international tourism revenues and foreign trade on economic growth for G-20 member countries using dynamic panel data analysis method. Within the scope of the study, dynamic panel data analysis method was used for the period 2007-2019 by considering G-20 member countries. Within the scope of the analysis, estimation was made using the fixed effects model, GMM, GMM robust, system GMM and system GMM robust (resilient error) estimators. As a result of the analysis, it was found that international tourism revenues, foreign trade and total workforce affect economic growth in a statistically positive and significant way.

ULUSLARARASI TURİZM GELİRLERİ, DIŞ TİCARET VE EKONOMİK BÜYÜME: DİNAMİK PANEL VERİ ANALİZİ

Abstract

Dünya ekonomilerine etkileri bakımından turizm faaliyetlerine verilen önem giderek artmaktadır. Turizm birçok ülkede milli gelirin artmasına ve yeni iş alanlarının ortaya çıkmasına katkı sağlamaktadır. Ekonomik büyüme ve kalkınmanın gerçekleştirilebilmesi için ülkelerin uluslararası turizme verdikleri destek her geçen gün artmaktadır. Ülkelerin ihtiyaç duyduğu döviz turizm sektörü ile karşılanabilmektedir. Bu dövizler mal ve hizmet üretimine, ödemeler dengesi açıklarının kapatılmasına, ekonomik büyüme ve kalkınmanın sağlanmasına önemli katkılar sunmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, uluslararası turizm gelirleri ve dış ticaretin ekonomik büyüme üzerindeki etkilerini G-20 üyesi ülkeler için dinamik panel veri analizi yöntemiyle incelemektir. Çalışma kapsamında G-20 üyesi ülkeler ele alınarak 2007-2019 dönemi için dinamik panel veri analizi yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Analiz kapsamında, sabit etkiler modeli, GMM, GMM robust, sistem GMM ve sistem GMM robust (dirençli hata) tahmincileri kullanılarak tahmin gerçekleştirilmiştir. Analiz sonucunda, uluslararası turizm gelirleri, dış ticaret ve toplam işgücünün ekonomik büyümeyi istatistiksel olarak pozitif ve anlamlı yönde etkilediği bulgularına ulaşılmıştır.
