THE COHERENCE BETWEEN CLASSROOM TEACHERS’ IMPLEMENTATION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CURRICULUM AND THEIR BELIEFS ABOUT SCIENCE EDUCATION

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate coherence between classroom teachers’ practices of elementary science and technology curriculum and their beliefs about science education. The study was designed as a qualitative study in which case study method was used. The participants of the study were five classroom teachers whose professional experience was over 15 years. The classes of these teachers were observed throughout one academic year such that three class hours per month. Moreover, the teachers were interviewed and voice-recorder was used. In order to support qualitative data related with beliefs about science education, a science education belief scale was also administered. Therefore, the data was collected through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and the science education belief scale. Descriptive analysis method was used in data analysis. The findings revealed that there was no exact coherence between teachers’ classroom practices of science and technology curriculum and their beliefs about science education. The reasons of inconsistency between teaching practices and beliefs were discussed in light of the findings.

SINIF ÖĞRETMENLERİNİN FEN VE TEKNOLOJİ ÖĞRETiM PROGRAMINI UYGULAMA DURUMU İLE FEN EĞİTİMİNE YÖNELİK İNANÇLARININ UYUMLULUĞU

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, sınıf öğretmenlerinin fen ve teknoloji dersi öğretim programı uygulamaları ile fen eğitimine yönelik inançları arasındaki uyumluluğu incelemektir. Nitel araştırma olarak tasarlanan bu araştırmada durum çalışması yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmaya mesleki tecrübesi 15 yıldan fazla olan gönüllü beş sınıf öğretmeni katılmıştır. Bu öğretmenlerin ayda üç ders saati olmak üzere bir öğretim yılı boyunca fen ve teknoloji dersleri gözlemlenmiştir. Ayrıca öğretmenlerle yüz yüze görüşmeler yapılmış ve ses kaydına alınmıştır. Fen eğitimine yönelik inanç bağlamında elde edilen nitel verileri desteklemek için fen eğitimine yönelik bir inanç ölçeği de uygulanmıştır. Dolayısıyla çalışmanın verileri sınıf gözlemleri, öğretmen görüşmeleri ve fen eğitimine yönelik inanç ölçeği ile toplanmıştır. Veriler, nitel aras¸tırma yaklas¸ımlarından betimsel analiz teknigˆi kullanılarak analiz edilmis¸tir. Analizler, sınıf öğretmenlerinin fen ve teknoloji öğretim programı uygulamaları ile fen eğitimine yönelik inançları arasında tam bir uyumluluk olmadığını göstermiştir. Uygulamalar ile inançlar arasında gözlenen uyumsuzlukların nedenleri elde edilen veriler ışığında tartışılmıştır.
