TRADITIONAL CONSERVATISM AND MODERN CONSERVATISM IN THE WORKS OF BENJAMIN DISRAELI

Abstract

In this study, how traditional and modern conservatism have emerged in English society and what they mean for society have been analyzed. In what aspects modern conservatism which is accepted as the invention of Benjamin Disraeli who was one of the most influential persons in 19th century English politics differs from traditional conservatism, what it contributed to society in the way of democracy, what kind of changes in politics it triggered and what are the social results of these changes have been discussed. Besides, the functions of bourgeoisie, aristocracy and working classes and of institutions such as the church and the monarchy in the Middle Age and in 19th century have been compared. How Disraeli tackled this issue in his works has been assessed. The contribution of modern conservatism to democracy and the primary duties of social classes in Tory democracy of Disraeli have been studied. Disraeli, through his novels, supported the principles and doctrines of this new system which he tried to montage to society. In this paper, his works have been scrutinized and his political and social goals have been tried to be revealed.

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, geleneksel ve modern muhafazakarlık kavramlarının İngiliz toplumunda ne şekilde ortaya çıktığı ve toplum için ne anlam ifade ettiği araştırılmıştır. 19. yüzyıl İngiliz politikasının en etkin isimlerinden Benjamin Disraeli’nin icadı olarak kabul edilen modern muhafazakarlığın, geleneksel muhafazakarlık anlayışından hangi açıdan farklılık gösterdiği, topluma demokrasi anlamında neler kattığı, politikada ne gibi değişimleri tetiklediği ve bu değişimlerin yol açtığı toplumsal sonuçların neler olduğu ele alınmıştır. Ayrıca aristokrasi, burjuva ve işçi sınıflarıyla kilise ve krallık gibi kurumların Ortaçağdaki işlevleri ile 19. yüzyıldaki işlevleri karşılaştırılmıştır. Bunların Disraeli’nin yapıtlarında ele alınış tarzı değerlendirilmiştir. Modern muhafazakarlığın demokrasiye katkısı ve Disraeli’nin Tory demokrasisinde toplumsal sınıfların birincil görevleri incelenmiştir. Disraeli, toplumda yerleştirmeye çalıştığı bu yeni sistemin öğreti ve ilkelerini, yazdığı romanlarıyla desteklemiştir. Çalışmamızda bu yapıtlar incelenmiş ve yazarın politik ve toplumsal amaçları ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır.
