Disaster Preparedness in Nursing Education: A Study on Disaster Preparedness of Intern Nurses

The aim of this study was to examine the disaster preparedness of intern nurses. This study was conducted in a cross-sectional descriptive design. It was reported in accordance with STROBE reporting guidelines. The study population consisted of intern students from universities in two provinces. Based on the minimum acceptable sample size table, 200 students were selected using stratified sampling. Data were collected using the "Descriptive Characteristics Form" and Disaster Readiness Scale. The data within the scope of the study were analyzed with SPSS 22 program. 69.0 % of the intern nurses were women, 93.5 % of them thought that the first type of disaster they thought of was earthquake, 63.5 % of them accessed information about disasters via the internet, 66 % of them considered earthquake as the most important type of disaster, 70.0 % of them did not know the earthquake risk status of the city they lived in, 61.5 % of them received a disaster-related training, 69.0 % of them had experienced a disaster and 70.0 % of them thought that they were not prepared for earthquake. It was determined that the total scores of the earthquake preparedness scale of the students participating in the study were at a moderate level. In the study, it was found that the disaster preparedness of intern nurses was at a moderate level. It was concluded that effective interventions should be made to strengthen disaster-related education programs and increase disaster awareness in students.
