Different forms of colitis: Determinate or indeterminate?

Year 2013, Volume: 12 Issue: 1, 38 - 41, 01.04.2013

Abstract

Despite several classification systems and sophisticated diagnostic tools, the differentiation between UC and CD can still be difficult. In approximately 10% of cases, no differentiation can be made, and these cases are clas- sified as IC. IC is even more marked in children than in adults, and further complicated by the fact that upper gastrointestinal disease (gastric or duodenal disease, or both, but lacking granulomas on biopsy) can be seen in patients in whom UC seems to be the most likely diag- nosis clinically. However, the upper gastrointestinal pat- hology tends to resolve, though less commonly in adults (6%–12%) compared with children (20%–75%) (20,21)
