Gastrointestinal endoscopy findings in iron-deficient patients

Öz

Background and Aims: Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are among the important causes of iron deficiency. Our aim was to identify upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic findings in patients with iron deficiency. Materials and Methods: Patients diagnosed with iron deficiency according to the ICD-10 coding system and who underwent upper and/or lower gastrointestinal system endoscopy were included in the study. Endoscopic and pathologic findings were collected for descriptive statistics. Results:Data of 1200 patients were reviewed. Two hundred and seven patients were included in the study. Upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy were performed in 205 and 169 patients, respectively. In upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, biopsies were taken from the stomach and second part of the duodenum in 116 and 84 patients, respectively. In lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, 30% of patients had no pathologic finding, whereas 4.7% of patients were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Conclusions: Iron deficiency is an important finding in gastrointestinal diseases. Upper and lower endoscopic examination is vital for explaining the cause of iron deficiency.

Demir eksikliği olan hastalarda gastrointestinal sistem endoskopi bulguları

Öz

Giriş ve Amaç:Gastrointestinal sistem hastalıkları demir esikliğinin önemli nedenlerinden biridir. Biz bu çalıflma ile demir eksikliği olan hastalardaki üst ve alt gastrointestinal endoskopi bulgularını tanımlamayı amaçladık.Gereç ve Yöntem: ICD-10 kodlama sistemine göre demir eksikliği tanısı almıfl hastaların bulguları retrospektif olarak tarandı. Üst ve alt gastrointestinal endoskopi bulguları ile varsa biyopsi sonuçları toplanarak tanımlayıcı istatistik ile değerlendirildi. Bulgular:Çalıflma için, ICD-10'a göre demir eksikliği tanısı almıfl 1200 hastanın verileri gözden geçirildi. Değerlendirmeye alınan 207 hastanın 205'ine üst gastrointestinal endoskopi yapılmıfl ve 116 hastadan mide, 84 hastadan duodenal biyopsi alınmıfltı. Kolonoskopi yapılan 169 hastanın %30'unda herhangi bir patoloji saptanmazken, %4.7'sinde kolorektal kanser saptandı.Sonuç: Demir eksikliği gastrointestinal sistem patolojilerinin önemli bir bulgusudur. Üst ve alt gastrointestinal endoskopi bu bulguyu ortaya çıkaran nedenleri arafltırmada önemli ve gerekli tanı yöntemleridir.
