Hemşirelik Lisans Eğitimi, Öğrenci Hemşirelerin Yaşlılara Karşı Tutumunu Etkiliyor mu?

Year 2019, Volume: 3 Issue: 1, 24 - 28, 01.01.2019

Abstract

Does Nursing Undergraduate Education Affect Student Nurses' Attitudes towards the Elderly?

Year 2019, Volume: 3 Issue: 1, 24 - 28, 01.01.2019

Abstract

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the effect of nursing undergraduate education at Ahi Evran University School of Health in Kırşehir on the attitude of student nurses towards elderly people. The research was completed with 275 students in the first and fourth grades nursing department. The data of the study were collected with socio-demographic characteristics questionnaire and Kogan’s Attitudes towards Old People Scale. The mean age of the students was 21,10 ± 1,88 and 64,7% of them were female. 44.4% of the students were in first grade, 55.6% in fourth grade. The positive attitude score of the first year students was 50,99 ± 7,83, and the negative point average was 40,05 ± 7,35; In the fourth grade, the positive attitude score of the students was 52.61 ± 7.62, and the negative attitude point was 37.79 ± 7.99. There is no statistically significant difference between the positive attitude scores when comparing between classes. p> 0,05 However, the negative attitude score of the fourth grade students is lower than the first grade and the difference between the negative attitudes of the first and fourth grade students is statistically significant. It can be said that nursing education decreases the negative attitude towards elderly people and does not create a significant change in the positive attitude. According to these results; it is recommended to include more issues related to elderly health in both theoretical and application fields in nursing education
