Investigating Impacts Of Creative Writing Activities About Numbers On Preservice Mathematics Teachers’ Cognitive Structures

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate the impacts of creative writing activities about numbers on pre-service teachers’ cognitive structures. In this mixed design, it has been used both preexperimental design and single case study. The content analysis applied to 28 pre-service math teachers’ pre and post mind maps, stories and poems that they have written. The t-test has been used to understand whether there is a significant difference between pre and post scores. The results have showed that there is not any significant difference between pre and post scores about mathematical conceptions and relations within mind maps. However, it is realized that there is a significant difference in the post-test results of the mind maps considering the case of the daily-life conceptions about the numbers. The results of content analysis have showed that the pre-service teachers could not reflect the meanings of and the relationships among the mathematical conceptions on the stories at appropriate level; most of the pre-service teachers have problematically associated numerical conceptions; however, they have used certain conceptions that they have benefitted from within the stories and that they did not use within pre-maps
