In this research changes in students’ thinking on some basic science concepts such as animals,
plants, light, force, etc. by grade were investigated by obtaining data from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. The
research was conducted in Turhan Feyzioğlu primary school in Ankara in the 2007-2008 academic year.
Present study was conducted with 78 students, approximately 26 students from each grade level. The data
were collected by applying a diagnostic test which has 18 questions about animals, vegetables, force, light,
electricity, and change of state and interviewing 9 students. In the analysis of quantitative data, SPSS was
used. In the analysis of interview data, descriptive qualitative analysis was applied. Based on research
findings, it was determined that students have scientific knowledge about scientific concepts as well as
knowledge that is not scientific. Findings also show that the use of scientific expressions increases as the
grade level increases. However, in some of the concepts, 7th grade students showed lower performance than 6th
and 8th grade students.
