Textual Analysis of James Joyce’s Story The Boarding House

Abstract

James Joyce (1882-1941) was born in Ireland. Joyce is known as a realist and modernist. The realist movement briefly focuses on the realistic depiction of objects, people and events in works of art. James Joyce is one of the important representatives of realism. With this short story, the author tried to show the flaws in Irish society. Although the author chooses his characters from the simple classes, their behavior, characters and speech styles are stereo types that are frequently encountered in daily life. Över-indulgence in money has destroyed family ties. The work coincides with the collapse of the romanticism movement and the birth of the realist movement. The style and structure used in the work is based on a broken family. This work, which was welcomed with interest in literary circles, has enabled the work to survive until today with its simple language and approach to the realities of life. James Joyce described emotions and thoughts with deep and subtles of analysis. Content analysis method and descriptive analysis technique were used in our study. After the introduction of the study, a partial Turkish translation of the text was made, followed by character and text analysis (analysis) of the story. The simplicity of the speech of the heroes draws attention with its suitability to everyday language. There is a limited environment in terms of subject matter. The characters are skillfully portrayed and presented in the form of real characters. The story is characterized by strong character development. The boarding house is actually of great importance in terms of reflecting the social situation of Irish society. The plot is skillfully woven. The story is a vivid example of social pressures and the fact that the institution of marriage was not built on solid foundations in the past. People’s inability to use their communication skills effectively or expressing their feelings and thoughts in a provocative tone, unconscious accusations are the factors that fuel violence. The church-priest metaphr symbolizes the sanctioning power of religion in Irish society at the time. The plot is apparently a series of efforts to solve the events that end in a traumatic way, with one of the family members fallingin to misery and the other, Ms. Mooney, rising from the ashes and trying to solve the developing events with her practica lintelligence. We hope that the textual analysis of James Joyce's story The Boarding House will contribute to the field.

JAMES JOYCE’UN PANSİYON İSİMLİ HİKÂYESİNİN METİNSEL ANALİZİ

Abstract

Realizmin önemli temsilcilerinden biri olan James Joyce (1882-1941) İrlanda’da doğdu. Joyce realist ve modernist olarak bilinir. Realist akım kısaca sanat eserlerinde nesnelerin insanların ve olayların gerçekçi bir şekilde tasvir edilmesine odaklanır. Yazar bu kısa hikâye ile İrlanda toplumundaki aksaklıkları göstermeye çalışmıştır. Yazar karakterlerini basit tabakadan seçmesine rağmen davranışları, tavırları ve konuşma üslupları günlük hayatta sıkça rastlanan stereo tiplerdir. Paraya aşırı düşkünlük aile bağlarını yok etmiş. Eser romantizm akımının çöküp realist akımın doğuşuna denk gelir. Eserde kullanılan üslup ve yapı parçalanmış bir ailenin temelinde işleniyor. Edebiyat çevrelerinde ilgi ile karşılanan bu eser dilinin basit oluşu, hayatın gerçeklerine yaklaşım biçimi eserin günümüze kadar gelmesini sağlamıştır. James Joyce duygu ve düşünceleri derin ve ince ruh çözümlemeleriyle anlatmıştır. Çalışmamızda içerik analiz yöntemi ve betimsel analiz tekniği kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın giriş bölümünden sonra metnin Kısmi Türkçe özet çevirisi konulmuş, arkasından hikâyenin karakter ve metin çözümlemesi (analizi) yapılmıştır. Kahramanların konuşmalarında sadeliği günlük dile uygunluğu ile dikkat çekiyor. Konu bakımından sınırlı bir çevre vardır. Kişiler büyük bir ustalıkla canlandırılmış, gerçek karakterler biçiminde ortaya konmuştur. Hikâyede güçlü karakter gelişimleri ön plandadır. Pansiyon aslında İrlanda toplumunun sosyal durumunu yansıtması bakımından büyük öneme sahiptir. Olayın örgüsü ustalıkla örülmüş. Hikâye toplumsal baskılar ve evlilik müessesinin geçmişte de sağlam temeller üzerine kurulmadığının canlı bir örneği. İnsanların sahip oldukları iletişim becerilerini etkin kullanamaması ya da duygu ve düşüncelerin kışkırtıcı bir tonda ifade edilmesi, bilinçsizce suçlamalar şiddeti körükleyen etkenler olarak karşımıza çıkıyor. Kilise papaz metaforuyla o dönem İrlanda toplumundaki dinin yaptırım gücü sembolleştirilmiş. Olay örgüsü anlaşılır travmatik bir sonla biten aile bireylerinden birinin sefalete düşmesi, diğerinin küllerinden yeniden doğması ve gelişen olayları pratik zekâsıyla çözmek için verdiği çabalar dizisi. James Joyce’un pansiyon isimli hikâyesinin metinsel çözümlemesinin alana katkı sağlayacağını umarız.
