The Evolution of Turkish Poster Art: From 1923 to the Digital Age

Abstract

Purpose: This study analyzes the transformation of Turkish poster art from 1923 to the present by examining how socio-political, economic, and technological factors have shaped its production dynamics. Design/methodology/approach: The research adopts a qualitative research method based on literature review and document analysis. Data were examined through historical synthesis and content analysis across four periods (1923–1950, 1950–1980, 1980–2000, and 2000–present). Purposive sampling was used to select posters representative of each period. Findings: Turkish poster art is interpreted to have evolved from a state-directed educational instrument into a market-oriented professional practice, and later into a digital and interactive field. Observations indicate that early Republican posters served propaganda and literacy purposes; post-1950 institutionalization enabled artistic autonomy; post-1980 neoliberal policies and digital technologies encouraged hybridization and transformed designers from craftsmen into digital operators; and today, artificial intelligence is reshaping the designer's role toward curation. Research limitations/implications: Due to access restrictions, local Anatolian posters and private collections were excluded from the scope. Future studies may conduct research on factors affecting Turkish poster art, alternative discourses, or local traces. Practical implications: By emphasizing the evolutionary process of Turkish poster art from its roots to the present and the critical thresholds within this process, this study serves as a resource for new research on the development of Turkish poster art. Originality/value: This study is among the first to systematically examine the ontological transformation of posters in the Turkish context from a holistic, century-long perspective, integrating three theoretical frameworks (Mitchell, Margolin, Manovich).
