Investigation of Mathematics Teacher Candidates' Operational Knowledge of Single Variable Functions to Limit Concept

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the pre-service teachers' operational knowledge about the limit concept of single variable function. The model of the study is a basic qualitative research and the data collection tool consists of open-ended questions. In this study, content analysis technique was adopted in the interpretation of the findings. The participants of this study consisted of 30 teacher canditates who took Analiz I lesson in the Primary Mathematics Teaching Program of the Department of Primary Education of a state university in Turkey. When the data obtained from the research is examined, it is seen that the candidates usually write the desired point in the function instead of finding the limit of the function at a point, they prefer to reach the result by multiplying the conjugate and performing algebraic operations. It was observed that the candidates were successful in taking the left, right limit of the functions of one variable and equalizing the definition value to the limit value. Candidates were most likely to find the limit of the exact value function. This situation; the lack of conceptual knowledge about the full value function of the candidates. If the limit is related to the value of the function with the value at the point taken, solutions by heart are obtained. The limit at a point must be associated with the behavior of the function in the neighborhood of the point being received. The relationship between conceptual and computational knowledge should be established in limit teaching and attention should be paid to semantic learning that will enable students to develop mathematical thinking instead of memorized methods.

Matematik Öğretmen Adaylarının Tek Değişkenli Fonksiyonların Limit Kavramına Yönelik İşlemsel Bilgilerinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı öğretmen adaylarının tek değişkenli fonksiyonların limiti kavramına yönelik işlemsel bilgilerinin incelenmesidir. Bu araştırmada öğretmen adaylarının limit kavramı ile ilgili sadece işlemsel bilgisi ele alınmıştır. Araştırmanın modeli temel nitel araştırma olup veri toplama aracı açık uçlu sorulardan oluşmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, elde edilen bulguların yorumlanmasında içerik analizi tekniği benimsenmiştir. Bu araştırmanın katılımcıları 2017-2018 eğitim öğretim yılı güz döneminde Türkiye' de bir devlet üniversitesinde İlköğretim Matematik Öğretmenliği Programında kayıtlı olan Analiz I dersini alan 30 öğretmen adayından oluşmuştur. Araştırmadan elde edilen veriler incelendiğinde öğretmen adaylarının genellikle fonksiyonun bir noktadaki limitini bulurken istenen noktayı fonksiyonda yerine yazdıkları, eşleniği ile çarparak ve cebirsel işlemler yaparak sonuca ulaşmayı tercih ettikleri görülmüştür. Öğretmen adayların tek değişkenli fonksiyonların sol, sağ limitini almada ve tanım değerini limit değerine eşitlemekte başarılı oldukları gözlenmiştir. Adaylar en çok tam değer fonksiyonunun limitini bulmada zorlanmışlardır. Bu durum; adayların tam değer fonksiyonu ile ilgili kavramsal bilgi eksikliğine sahip olmaları ile ilgilidir. Limit, fonksiyonun limiti alınan noktadaki değeri ile ilişkilendirilirse ezbere çözümler elde edilir. Bir fonksiyonun bir noktadaki limiti, fonksiyonun limiti alınan noktanın komşuluğundaki davranışı ile ilişkilendirilmelidir. Limit öğretiminde kavramsal ve işlemsel bilgi arasında denge kurulmalı ve ezbere yöntemlerden kaçınarak matematiksel düşünmenin gelişimini sağlayacak kavramsal öğrenmeyi destekleyen öğretim yöntemleri kullanılmalıdır.
