Potential soil erosion susceptibility assessment using the LEAM model: Evaluating its response to projected precipitation changes

Abstract

Background and aims Assessing soil erosion susceptibility is essential for effective land management and conservation planning. This study aimed to determine the spatial distribution of potential soil erosion susceptibility using the Land Erodibility Assessment Model (LEAM) and to examine whether projected precipitation changes would alter the model output. Methods Geben Valley National Park was selected as the study area. Slope data were derived from a 30 m ASTER DEM, rainfall erosivity was calculated using the Modified Fournier Index (MFI), and soil erodibility values were assigned from major soil-group data. Precipitation projections generated by the General Directorate of Meteorological Service were evaluated for the periods 2041–2070 and 2071–2099 under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. Results Very high potential erosion susceptibility covered 64.25% of the study area, while high, moderate, and low classes accounted for 16.96%, 13.23%, and 5.56%, respectively. Rainfall erosivity and soil erodibility remained within the low to moderate classes and did not exhibit sufficient variation to alter the slope-based class assignments in the LEAM decision matrix. Consequently, the final susceptibility distribution reproduced the spatial pattern of the slope classes. Projected MFI values decreased under all scenarios and remained below the high rainfall-erosivity class; therefore, the final LEAM classes were not expected to change. Conclusions These findings indicate that LEAM can provide a transparent broad-scale screening assessment, but its wide class thresholds may limit its sensitivity to moderate variations in rainfall erosivity and soil erodibility.
