Ibn Rushd and Aristotle: The Journey of Philosophy to the West

Abstract

This study examines Ibn Rushd (Averroes) not merely as a commentator on Aristotle but as a rationalist system-builder whose original contributions—such as the reason–revelation relationship and the theory of double truth—significantly shaped the course of philosophy. The aim is to analyze his intellectual legacy in terms of its place within the evolution of scholastic thought and its role in East–West philosophical interaction. Methodologically, the research evaluates Ibn Rushd’s Aristotelian commentaries alongside key works such as Fasl al-Maqāl and Tahāfut al-Tahāfut through contextual, conceptual, and comparative textual analysis. It further investigates his impact on the emergence of Latin Averroism and the methodological debates with scholastic philosophers such as Thomas Aquinas. The study concludes that Ibn Rushd’s view of reason and revelation as complementary dimensions of the same truth integrated Aristotelian epistemology into Islamic thought. This approach contributed to the institutionalization of rationalist thought in the medieval Latin world and laid the intellectual groundwork for the Renaissance and Enlightenment. Thus, Ibn Rushd is positioned as a lasting bridge in the philosophical dialogue between East and West, both in historical and contemporary contexts.

İbn Rüşd ve Aristoteles: Felsefenin Batıya Yolculuğu

Abstract

Bu çalışma, İbn Rüşd’ü (Averroes) Batı felsefesi tarihinde yalnızca Aristoteles’in yorumcusu değil, akıl–vahiy ilişkisi ve çifte hakikat teorisi gibi özgün katkılarıyla rasyonalist bir sistem kurucusu olarak ele almaktadır. Amaç, onun felsefi mirasını skolastik düşüncenin evrimindeki yeri ve Doğu–Batı felsefi etkileşimindeki rolü açısından incelemektir. Yöntem olarak, İbn Rüşd’ün Aristoteles şerhleri ile Fasl el-Makāl ve Tehâfütü’t-Tehâfut gibi temel eserleri bağlamsal, kavramsal ve karşılaştırmalı analiz yoluyla değerlendirilmiş; Latin Averroizm’in oluşumu ve Thomas Aquinas gibi skolastik filozoflarla girilen metodolojik tartışmalar üzerinden etkileri analiz edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, İbn Rüşd’ün akıl ve vahyi aynı hakikatin farklı düzeyleri olarak gören yaklaşımı, Aristotelesçi epistemolojiyi İslam düşüncesiyle bütünleştirmiştir. Bu yaklaşım, Orta Çağ Latin dünyasında rasyonalist düşüncenin kurumsallaşmasına katkı sağlamış, Rönesans ve Aydınlanma’ya giden entelektüel temeli hazırlamıştır. Böylece İbn Rüşd hem tarihsel hem de çağdaş bağlamda Doğu–Batı felsefi diyaloğunda kalıcı bir köprü olarak konumlanmaktadır.
