Investigation of Teacher Competencies of Classroom Teachers for Students with Learning Disabilities

Abstract

The aim of this research is to evaluate the teacher competencies of classroom teachers for students with learning difficulties. The research was carried out using the descriptive survey model, one of the quantitative research methods. The universe of the research consists of classroom teachers working in Karabağlar district of İzmir province in the 2019-2020 academic year. The sample of the study consisted of classroom teachers working in 20 primary schools randomly selected from primary schools in Karabağlar district. The “Teacher Competencies Scale for Students with Learning Disabilities” developed for teachers by Keskin, Korkut, and Can (2016) was used as a data collection tool. The data obtained from 255 teachers did not show a normal distribution and were analyzed with appropriate statistical analysis. As a result of the research, it was seen that the teacher competencies of the teachers for students with learning difficulties were at the level of I agree (X=4.16) and the qualifications were gender, education level, seniority, taking lessons for learning disabilities, in-service training for learning disabilities, having students with learning difficulties in the past and being in the classroom. It was determined that there was no difference according to the variables of being a student with learning disabilities.
