Abstract

Numbers themselves hold an interpretative tendency that, in some ways, controls the way people approach a literary text. It is relevant to pay attention to the minimal trifles of a literary text since the text itself complies with the morality of life as the fundamental intention of literary production. In Tess of the d’Urbervilles, the magic of the number three is enhanced in characterization. More precisely, in the coexistence of three characters who continuously play on the strings of each other’s lives and fates: Tess Durbeyfield, Alec d’Urbervilles and Angel Clare. The delicacy of the nature of their relationships creates a deeper connection on the level of the themes of judgement, forgiveness, love, justice, fate, and the nature of women. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the morality conveyed in relation to the characters, showing how each decision influences the entire narrative arc. The paper demonstrates how Hardy integrates universal questions of morality with intimate portrayals of tragedy, love, and guilt, making his novel timeless and morally instructive. This expanded reflection emphasizes how literary structures and thematic repetition reflect the unpredictability of human fate while underscoring the power of interpretation in shaping meaning.

Hardy’nin Tess Of The D’urbervilles Romanında Karakterizasyon ve Kaderin Üçlü Dinamikleri

Abstract

Edebî metinlere yaklaşımda, sayıların kendileri, okurun yorumlama sürecini belirli bir yöne sevk eden ve hatta kontrol eden güçlü bir eğilim barındırır. Bu bağlamda, biçimci bir perspektif benimseyerek, bir eserin en küçük ve önemsiz gibi görünen ayrıntılarına dahi odaklanmak büyük önem taşır; zira edebî metin, nihai hedefi olarak yaşamın ahlaki dokusuyla örtüşen bir yapı sunar. Thomas Hardy'nin Tess of the d’Urbervilles adlı eserinde, üç sayısının bu sembolik ve yapısal gücü, özellikle karakterizasyonun temelini oluşturarak zenginleştirilmiştir. Bu durum, daha net bir ifadeyle, birbirlerinin hayat ve kader çizgilerini kesintisiz bir şekilde etkileyen ve adeta birbirlerinin varlığına mahkûm olan üç ana karakterin-Tess Durbeyfield, Alec d’Urbervilles ve Angel Clare- kaçınılmaz birlikteliğinde somutlaşır. Bu karakterler arasındaki ilişkilerin incelikli ve karmaşık doğası, romanın temelini oluşturan yargı, affetme, aşk, adalet, kader ve kadının doğası gibi evrensel temalarla derin ve çok katmanlı bir bağ kurarak anlatıyı zenginleştirir. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, söz konusu karakterler aracılığıyla okura aktarılan ahlaki çerçeveyi titizlikle aydınlatmaktır. Aynı zamanda çalışma, trajik bir romanın edebî ahenginin ve bütünlüğünün inşa edilmesinde karakterlerin üstlendiği merkezi role ilişkin özgün ve yenilikçi bir biçimci bakış açısı geliştirmeyi hedeflemektedir.
