The Role of Plane Blocks in Postoperative Pain Management in Spinal Surgery: A Narrative Review

Abstract

Spinal surgeries are major procedures that cause severe postoperative pain. Therefore, multimodal analgesia techniques are commonly adopted to achieve effective pain control. In recent years, various plane blocks have been increasingly investigated for this purpose. This study aimed to review the plane blocks described for spinal surgeries and to evaluate their analgesic efficacy, advantages, and disadvantages. Erector spinae plane block, thoracolumbar interfascial plane block, retrolaminar block, multifidus block, mid-transverse process to pleura block, and intersemispinal plane block were reviewed. Their analgesic effects, potential complications, and clinical differences were compared based on current literature. Among these techniques, the erector spinae plane block appears to be the most frequently studied and widely applied. However, other plane blocks may also provide effective and safe alternatives at specific surgical levels. Considering the possible benefits and risks of multilevel or bilateral applications, an individualized analgesic approach is recommended.
