Abstract

Investigation of Physical and Rheological Properties of Elvaloy and Polyphosphoric Acid Modified Bitumen

Year 2022, Volume: 22 Issue: 5, 1122 - 1128, 27.10.2022

Abstract

In order to guarantee the performance of asphalt coatings in complex environments, some materials such as styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), crumb rubber (CR), and polyphosphoric acid (PPA) have been used in bitumen modification. During the modification methods, alternative additives have been used to enhance or supplement the conventional asphalt binder. The most commonly used polymer type additive in the production of modified bitumen is styrene–butadiene-styrene (SBS). In this study, the combined use of Elvaloy and phosphoric acid (PPA) as an alternative to SBS additive was investigated. In addition, the effect of the bituminous binder on the rheological and physical properties was also investigated. Modified bitumen was prepared by using elvaloy/PPA additives prepared under the specified conditions, and traditional and Superpave binder tests were applied on pure and modified binders. As a result, when the traditional and Superpave binder test results of 3 different binders used in the study were examined, it was determined that these binders increased the performance of the pure binder.
