Abstract
Regarding computers as the fundamental means of contemporary education, defining the perceptions of
individuals about the computers will inevitably influence education in terms of curricula, teachers and learners.
Especially, it is important to know the computer perceptions of both teachers making instruction on computers in
schools and computer engineers developing computers in terms of software and hardware in defining the needs of
them. This study was designed in accordance with this aim.
In this study, computer metaphors developed by the last year students of Department of Computer
Education and Instructional Technology, and Department of Computer Engineering in Anadolu University are
investigated. When the data collected from 67 students of both groups via a questionnaire is analyzed, it is found that
students of Department of Computer Engineering, unlike students of other group, have developed metaphors
representing structural features of computers and additionally they have not developed any metaphors related to
educational side of computers (book, dictionary, teacher etc.). On the other hand students of Department of
Computer Education and Instructional Technology have developed various metaphors; especially they have
developed metaphors representing functions of computers.
