A Study About Improving One’s Reading Skills Who Has Reading Disability

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine the student’s reading disability although there wasn’t any physical, mental, audial and visual problem. In parallel with this purpose it was tried to be determined the affect of “Word Box Strategy” and “Listening Passage Preview Strategy” which were performed to remove the reading disabilities. This study which the action research was used in, was performed with 5th grade student İ.A. (the name is hided because of ethical reason) who attended to Afyonkarahisar Center Hüseyin Sümer Elementary School in 2008- 2009 academic year. Each study proceeded 1-1,5 hour and totally it arrived 33 hours. The student’s reading level and reading disabilities were basically determined in the study. In the first studies with İ.A. it was confirmed that he couldn’t read fluently, he always spelled out, passed over, added something and followed with his finger while reading, misread, and read rockingly. In the direction of these data study was started with choosing suitable texts according to the level of the student. All of the studies with İ.A. was recorded. At the end of the study the reading and understanding level of İ.A. arised the “Instruction Level” from the “Anxiety Level” and the improvements were seen in reading disabilities.
