A Study About Improving One’s Reading Skills Who Has Reading Disability

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine the student’s reading disability although there wasn’t any physical, mental, audial and visual problem. In parallel with this purpose it was tried to be determined the affect of “Word Box Strategy” and “Listening Passage Preview Strategy” which were performed to remove the reading disabilities. This study which the action research was used in, was performed with 5th grade student İ.A. (the name is hided because of ethical reason) who attended to Afyonkarahisar Center Hüseyin Sümer Elementary School in 2008- 2009 academic year. Each study proceeded 1-1,5 hour and totally it arrived 33 hours. The student’s reading level and reading disabilities were basically determined in the study. In the first studies with İ.A. it was confirmed that he couldn’t read fluently, he always spelled out, passed over, added something and followed with his finger while reading, misread, and read rockingly. In the direction of these data study was started with choosing suitable texts according to the level of the student. All of the studies with İ.A. was recorded. At the end of the study the reading and understanding level of İ.A. arised the “Instruction Level” from the “Anxiety Level” and the improvements were seen in reading disabilities.

Okuma Güçlüğü Çeken Bir Öğrencinin Okuma Becerisinin Geliştirilmesine Yönelik Bir Çalışma

Öz

Bu çalışmada, bedensel, zihinsel, işitsel ve görsel hiçbir engeli olmamasına rağmen okuma güçlüğü çeken bir öğrencinin, okuma alanındaki yetersizliklerini belirlemek amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda da öğrencinin okuma alanındaki yetersizliklerini ortadan kaldırmaya yönelik olarak uygulanan “Kelime Kutusu Stratejisi (Word Box Strategy)” ile “Paragrafın Önceden Dinlenmesi Stratejisinin (Listening Passage Preview Strategy)” öğrencinin okuma düzeyine etkisi tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Eylem araştırması deseni kullanılan bu çalışma, 2008-2009 eğitim öğretim yılı bahar yarıyılında Afyonkarahisar Merkez Hüseyin Sümer İlköğretim Okuluna devam eden 5. sınıf öğrencisi İ.A. (etik nedenlerden dolayı öğrencinin adı gizlenmiştir) ile yürütülmüştür. Her bir çalışma yaklaşık olarak 1-1,5 saat sürmüş ve toplamda 33 saate ulaşmıştır. Çalışmada, öncelikli olarak öğrencinin okuma düzeyi ve okuma alanındaki yetersizlikleri belirlenmiştir. İ.A. ile yapılan ilk çalışmalarda, öğrencinin akıcı okuyamadığı, sürekli tekrar ederek ve heceleyerek okuduğu, atlayıp geçtiği, okurken eklemeler yaptığı, yanlış okuduğu, okurken parmağıyla takip ettiği ve öne doğru sallanarak okuduğu tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda öğrencinin düzeyine uygun metinler seçilerek çalışmaya başlanmıştır. İ.A. ile yapılan tüm çalışmalar video kaydına alınmıştır. Çalışmanın sonunda İ.A.’nın okuma ve anlama düzeyi “Endişe Düzeyinden” “Öğretim Düzeyine” yükselmiş ve okuma alanındaki yetersizliklerinde iyileşmeler görülmüştür.
