Early Academic Skills in Preschool Period

Abstract

Preschool period, covering 0-6 years of age, is the most intensive period of human development in terms of speed and quality. In this period, extremely important characteristics under the framework of physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language development are attained. One of the skills acquired during this period is the children’s early academic skills. Academic skills within preschool period include early literacy skills and math skills. Children’s social interactions, the environment and the stimulus materials around them, quality of interaction with these materials and the education given have all been found to have effect upon early academic skills. Early academic skills training, increases the level of children’s school readiness and provides much more success at advanced academic skills. Therefore, parents and educators have important responsibilities in fostering early academic skills. Starting from this standpoint, in this study it is aimed to discuss the scope of early academic skills during preschool period, literacy skills and characteristics of math skills, and basic skills that affect these skills with suggestions for parents and educators.
