Is It Possible That Faculties of Education Select Their Students
Abstract
While helping individuals embark on a profession, it is important in terms of the efficiency and self-realization
of the individual to ensure that the attributes of the profession and the personality traits,
interests and abilities of the individual match. This is also true for teaching profession. It is necessary
that the individuals who select teaching profession possess the personality traits required by this
profession. For teaching profession, in addition to enjoying teaching, it is essential to possess
personality traits such as being affectionate, patient and enthusiastic and a personality structure that is
democratic, creative and open to innovations and developments. Teachers are professional people who
ensure that students acquire desired behaviors. However, teaching profession is not a profession that
only requires transferring knowledge. Behavioral sciences show that teachers’ attitudes and behaviors
affect students. The selection of prospective teachers constitutes one of the most significant steps of
teacher training, which is a quite extensive and multidimensional process. In Turkey prospective
teachers are selected via some multiple choice examinations. These examinations cannot go beyond
knowledge level and thus can assess only one or a few aspects of prospective teachers. However, it is
not possible to carry out any assessments regarding the “appropriate personality” trait which holds a
significant place in teaching profession. This study aims to ask a question and start a search for a new
system for selecting qualified teachers.

Öz
Bireyleri bir meslek sahibi yaparken, mesleki özellikler ile bireylerin kişilik özelliklerinin, ilgi ve yeteneklerinin örtüşmesi, bireyin verimliliği ve kendini gerçekleştirmesi açısından önem taşır. Bu durum, öğretmenlik mesleği için de geçerlidir. Bu mesleği seçen bireylerin, kişilik olarak mesleğin gerektirdiği özelliklere uygun olması önemlidir. Etkili iletişim kuran, sevecen, sabırlı, coşkulu, öğretmekten zevk alan, yenilik ve gelişmeye açık, demokratik bir kişilik yapısı ve yaratıcılık gibi özellikler, öğretmenlik mesleği için gerekli kişilik özelliklerinin basında gelmektedir. Öğretmen, eğitim ortamında istendik davranışları kazandıran profesyonel kişidir. Ancak öğretmenlik mesleği, sadece bilgi aktarma rolünü gerektiren bir meslek değildir. Çünkü davranış bilimleri bize, öğrencinin öğretmenin tutum ve davranışlarından etkilendiğini göstermektedir. Oldukça kapsamlı ve çok boyutlu olan öğretmen yetiştirmenin en önemli basamaklarından birini, öğretmen adaylarının seçimi konusu oluşturmaktadır. Türkiye’de öğretmen adayları, bir takım çoktan seçmeli sınavlarla belirlenmekte, bu sınavlar ise bilgi düzeyinde kalmakta, dolayısıyla da adayların sadece bir veya birkaç yönünü ölçebilmektedir. Öğretmenlik mesleğinde çok önemli olan “uygun kişilik” özelliğine yönelik bir değerlendirme yapılamamaktadır. Bu makaleyle bir soru sorularak, nitelikli öğretmen için yeni bir seçme sisteminin arayışı başlatılmak istenmiştir.
