Determining Professional Learning Needs Of School Principals

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine professional learning needs of school principals. Descriptive method was applied. The universe of the study is the principals who work at primary and secondary schools in Asian part of Istanbul Province in the academic year of 2010-2011. The sampling of the study is the 185 primary and secondary school principals who were chosen by “randomly sampling” method in Kadıköy, Kartal, Maltepe and Üsküdar townships. The study was carried out quantitively and data were collected with a list 31-item-list developed by Kajs, Decman, Cox, Wilman and Ramon (2002) with their written permission. The data that collected with the list was analyzed with frequency, percentage, Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis. Participation of the principals to the items on the list generally “high” and “medium“ level. The principals feel high and medium level professional learning needs. There are also significant difference between the needs of them according to their sex, length of service, education and school type
