A Study on Teachers’ Perceptions of the Effect of the Primary Education Curricula (1st-5th Grades) on the Development of Reflective Thinking in terms of Some Variables

Abstract

This study is conducted to investigate teachers’ perceptions of the effect of the primary education curricula (1st-5th grades) on the development of reflective thinking in terms of some variables. This descriptive study had a survey design. Data were collected through a 47-item scale developed by the researchers from 644 classroom teachers in Elazig, Turkey. Data were analyzed through t tests, ANOVAs, Scheffe tests, Kruskal-Wallis H tests, and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results, in general, showed that teachers’ perceptions of the effect of the primary education curricula (1st-5th grades) on the development of reflective thinking were positive. In the study, it was also investigated whether teachers’ perceptions of the effect of the primary education curricula (1st-5th grades) on the development of reflective thinking do differ on their gender, experience, grade level, and class size. One of the most important results of this study, according to teachers’ perceptions, was class size that hinder the development of reflective thinking in classroom environment. Therefore, courses should be taught in classrooms with fewer students and activities that will develop reflective thinking skills should be done from earlier grade levels of primary education.
