An Investigation of Attitudes of 6-8th Graders Towards Universal Values
Abstract
This study aims to describe attitudes of 6-8th graders towards universal values and examine the impact
of their age, gender, grade level, academic performance, parental level of education, and family income on their
attitudes towards universal values. The population consisted of 6-8th graders being taught in primary schools in
ÇankÕUÕ, Turkey. The sample consisted of 361 students (203 girls, 158 boys) randomly selected from ÇankÕUÕøsmet
ønönü Elementary School located in ÇankÕUÕ which attracts the highest number of students from each level of
socioeconomic status. The sociodemographic data of children and their parents were collected through a “General
Information Form”, and the data related to attitudes towards universal values were obtained by the “Attitude Towards
Universal Values Scale” developed by Demir and Koç (2009). Data were analyzed through Kolmogorov-Smirnov,
Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H tests, and Cronbach Alpha (Į) reliability coefficient. Results showed that girls
(p>0.05), 8th graders, academically-talented children, those whose parents are university graduates, and those with a
family income of minimum wage or more have more positive attitudes towards universal values (p < 0.05).
