Evaluation of the Selection Exam for Civil Cervants (KPSS) from Pre-Service Teachers’ Perspectives

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the KPSS from pre-service teachers’ perspectives. The sample consisted of randomly selected 539 undergraduate students from Faculty of Education, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and School of Physical Education and Sports at Afyon Kocatepe University. Data were collected through the “Questionnaire Form for Evaluation of the KPSS”. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t- tests, ANOVAs, Kruskal-Wallis-H and Mann-Whitney-U tests. Results showed that pre-service teachers thought education they have received was not sufficient so that they have felt a need of exam preparation in private teaching institutions. Furthermore, test anxiety was found to affect achievement at a university negatively. Also, pre-service teachers expressed not only cognitive skills of pre-service teachers, but also different criteria should be considered for recruitment. Hence, to pre-service teachers, KPSS can not measure cultural knowledge, aptitude, and pedagogy. Pre-service teachers also have had some doubts about its objectivity.
