The Information Literacy Level of Vocational School and Technical School Students

Abstract

In 21.century it is necessary to gain new literacies and skills with focusing on learning. The skills can be exampled as career, technology and innovation and literacies as information, technology, culture and media. In this connection, the aim of this study is to examine vocational and technical high school students’ level of information literacy. The screening model is used. Information literacy scale is used for data collection. From 11th class 176 students from vocational and technical high schools’ departments of information technologies, accounting, child development, justice / clerkship, food and beverage services are participated in study, and they were selected by appropriate sampling method from Ankara province. For analyzes of collected data, descriptive analyzes were conducted according to the values of mean and standard deviation, the t-test and analysis of variance were used for comparison. At the end of study it is stated that the frequency of information literacy level os vocational school students’ is “often” ( x =3.86). A meaningful difference is not found according to gender. As a result of the analysis in order to determine whether there are differences in terms of sections in the part of the students' access to information there was a significant difference between students – departments of information technology, accounting and food and beverage service. Also there was a significant difference about dimension of ethical and legal regulations for using information between students-departments of information Technologies, justice / clerkship and food/beverage and between the students section It can be suggested that some qualitative and quantitative researches about different types of literacy at various vocational and technical education high schools can be useful.
