Oswald Külpe ve Würzburg Okulu’nun Avrupa’da Din Psikolojisinin Gelişimindeki Rolü
Abstract

The Role of Oswald Külpe and the Würzburg School in the Development of the Psychology of Religion in Europe
Abstract
This study examines the role of Oswald Külpe (1862–1915) and the Würzburg School, which developed under his leadership in the establishment of the psychology of religion in Europe from a historical and theoretical perspective. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study draws on primary and secondary sources, particularly the works of Külpe and his students. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The research findings demonstrated that the Würzburg School made significant contributions to the investigation of religious beliefs and behaviors through scientific methods by making higher mental processes a subject of experimental inquiry. The school’s method of systematic experimental introspection showed that thinking operates as a mental activity structured around intention, purpose and meaning. Concepts such as states of consciousness, determining tendencies, imageless thought and schematic anticipation, developed by the Würzburg School to explain the process of thinking made the irreducible and holistic nature of thought visible. These contributions expanded the scope of psychology beyond simple contents of consciousness and enabled the scientific investigation of higher mental phenomena, including religion. Consequently, Külpe and the Würzburg School played a significant role in the development of the psychology of religion in Europe. This role can be considered from two main perspectives. First, by expanding the theoretical framework of the field through highlighting the cognitive, volitional and meaning-making dimensions of religious experience and second, by contributing to the methodological development of the discipline through systematic experimental introspection and opening new avenues for the scientific study of religious life.
