Abstract

Self-Mention as an Element of Metadiscourse in Risaletü'n-Nushiyye

Abstract

The term metadiscourse is the way of understanding language in use, representing a writer's or speaker's attempts to guide a receiver's perception of a text. The main sources of metadiscourse interaction are divided into two main categories: stance and engagement. Self-mention, which is one of the main elements of the author's stance, is that the author, who produces the text, makes himself felt to the reader in various ways. Metadiscourse studies is a linguistic approach that is not frequently studied in literary texts in Turkey. It is important for researchers who carry out metadiscourse studies to evaluate metadiscourse taxonomies outside of academic texts. Approaching the literary texts of various languages with different linguistic fields and perspectives is important as it will reveal different results. The self-mention markers in Risâletü'n-Nushiyye, which was written by Yunus Emre and it is the one of the most important text of Turkish literature, were discussed in this study. The self-mention markers were determined by scanning the entire text many times within the scope of the study. Which structures are used as markers of self-mention in Risaletü'n-Nushiyye, their frequencies, distributions and properties are examined in this study. In addition, the similarities and differences between the self-mention markers were discussed. The role of metadiscourse theories put forward by Ken Hyland in revealing the subtleties of language has been tried to be applied in Risâletü'n-Nushiyye. The self-mention markers differently from other languages has been observed due to agglutinative language structure and pronoun drop feature of Turkish as a result of the study.
