Abstract

The majority of research examining the relationship between early childhood experiences and adult religiosity has mainly concentrated on attachment patterns and childhood maltreatment. Young’s Schema Theory, which addresses attachment patterns, childhood abuse-neglect and other early parent-child interactions in the context of the child’s universal needs offers a more comprehensive framework for understanding the relationship between parenting and adult religiosity. Although there are some studies examining the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and religiosity within the framework of Young Schema Theory, research addressing the relationship between parenting styles defined in the context of this theory and adult religiosity is very limited. For that reason, in this study, we investigated the relationship between parenting styles defined by The Schema Theory and religious orientation. Using Personal Information Form, Young’s Parenting Inventory, Muslim Religious Orientation Scale-Revised and Religious Fundamentalism Scale, the data was collected from 535 university students reached through random sampling. Results showed that paternal exploitative/abusive parenting style negatively and significantly predicted both intrinsic and fundamentalist religious orientations. Results also showed that maternal conditional/achievement focused parenting and paternal permissive-boundless parenting positively and significantly predicted extrinsic religious orientation. Finally, in almost all subdimensions of parenting styles, negative parenting was positively associated with the quest orientation. Based on the findings of this study, importance of parenting in religious education was emphasized. In addition, necessity of reconsidering the operational definitions of religious orientations in Turkish-Muslim context was pointed out.

Aile ve Dindarlık: Ebeveynlik Biçimleri ve Dindarlık Yönelimi İlişkisi
