Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess the perceptions of local people regarding the intensive tourism development in Alanya, one of the top destinations in Antalya province of Türkiye. Alanya hosts 15% of the foreign tourists coming to Türkiye and about 1/3 of the ones visiting Antalya. Therefore, Alanya is an important sample to examine the effects of mass tourism. Within the context of the research, a total of 450 questionnaires were collected and the data were analyzed by transferring them to the SPSS package program. As a consequence of the satisfactory findings, the structural model was tested using AMOS program. The study has investigated the attitudes of local people towards tourists and their general perceptions of tourism development based on the effects of intensive tourism on living place and quality of life. As a result of the findings, it has been determined that intensive tourism activities have negative impacts on the living place and quality of life of local people. In this respect, it has been concluded that the local people have negative attitudes towards tourists. However, it has also been concluded that local people have positive attitudes towards tourism development depending on the effects of intensive tourism activities on quality of life. Moreover, it has been determined that the attitude of local people to tourists has a negative effect on their general attitude towards tourism development. In the light of the findings of the study, several implications have been presented for tourism sector managers, policy makers and other tourism stakeholders.
