Security Robots: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

While using service robots in security services significantly contributes to security services, it also brings new risks. This study aims to measure society's perceptions of security robots. In this context, the study tried to measure how security robots are perceived, the positive and negative aspects of their use, and the perceptions about their usage areas. The qualitative analysis method was used in the study, and data were collected using the interview technique with semi-structured open-ended questions prepared by the researchers. MAXQDA Plus 2022 software was used to analyze the data. The study sample consists of 56 people residing in Kastamonu. The data coded by considering the literature were analyzed using hierarchical code-subcode models, code frequency tables, cross-tabulations and word clouds. Participants think that using security robots in dangerous tasks and continuous work without autonomous mobility and under the constant supervision of the human element will be beneficial in the field of security technologies and will facilitate the activities carried out in the security field. However, it was also stated that these technologies violate the right to privacy, create the feeling that we are being followed in every aspect of our lives and diminish our privacy.

Güvenlik Robotları: Nitel bir Çalışma

Abstract

Hizmet robotlarının güvenlik hizmetlerinde kullanılması bir yandan güvenlik hizmetlerine büyük katkı sağlarken bir yandan da yeni riskleri beraberinde getirmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı güvenlik robotları hakkında toplumun algılarını ölçülmektir. Bu kapsamda güvenlik robotlarının nasıl algılandığı, bu robotların kullanımının olumlu ve olumsuz tarafları ve kullanım alanları ile ilgili algılar ölçülmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmada nitel analiz yönteminden faydalanılmış, mülakat tekniği kullanılarak araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan yarı yapılandırılmış açık uçlu sorular ile veri toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde MAXQDA Plus 2022 yazılımı kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini Kastamonu’da ikamet eden 56 kişi oluşturmaktadır. Literatür dikkate alınarak kodlanan veriler, hiyerarşik kod alt kod modelleri, kod frekans tabloları, çapraz tablolar ve kelime bulutu kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Katılımcıların güvenlik robotları hakkında, tehlikeli görevlerde ve süreklilik arz eden işlerde otonom hareket kabiliyeti olmadan, sürekli insan unsurunun denetimi altında tutularak kullanılmasının güvenlik teknolojileri alanında oldukça faydalı olacağı ve güvenlik alanında yürütülen faaliyetlerin kolaylaşacağı kanaati bulunmaktadır. Bununla birlikte bu teknolojilerin özel hayatın gizliliğini ihlal ettiği, hayatımızın her alanında takip ediliyormuş hissiyatı oluşturduğu ve özel alanlarının azaldığı ifade edilmiştir.
