An Ecocritical Perspective on the Poems “Darg‘a” and “Tabiat Xato Ketdi” by the Uzbek Poet Tursunoy Sodiqova
Abstract
The relationship between human beings and nature has been interpreted in various ways throughout history, and the meanings attributed to the natural environment have evolved in response to social, cultural, and economic transformations. Literature, as a reflection of human experiences and perceptions, has consistently incorporated natural elements and, particularly in the modern era, has developed new perspectives in response to growing environmental concerns. Within this context, ecocriticism has emerged as an interdisciplinary approach that examines the representation of nature in literary works and evaluates the impact of human activities on the environment. This study investigates the ecocritical perspectives found in the poetry of the Uzbek poet Tursunoy Sodiqova by focusing on her portrayal of natural elements and environmental themes. Her poems “Darg‘a” (Leader) and “Tabiat Xato Ketdi” (Nature Went Wrong) were translated into Turkish and subsequently analyzed through an ecocritical framework. The findings reveal that themes such as environmental degradation, the human–nature relationship, ecological balance, and responsibility toward nature occupy a significant place in the poems. The study highlights the role of literature in raising environmental awareness and fostering ecological consciousness, while also demonstrating that ecological attitudes and behaviors are closely connected to cultural and psychological value systems.
