From the Lost Name to Subjectivation: A Structuralist Semiotic Analysis of Communicative Identity Construction in Spirited Away

Abstract

Identity is increasingly understood as a process of meaning-making continuously reconstructed through social interactions, cultural signs, and narrative structures. Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, 2001) presents a multilayered narrative that explores identity reconstruction through the loss of one's name, the erosion of memory, and the reconstitution of the subject. In the film, Chihiro's loss of her real name and subsequent renaming as "Sen" symbolize the redefinition of personal identity under institutional power, whereas recovering her true name signifies the completion of the process of subjectivation. This study examines Spirited Away through an interpretive qualitative approach to analyze the semiotic reconstruction of identity. The analytical framework draws upon Barthes' concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth; Greimas' actantial model, narrative schema, and semiotic square; and Propp's narrative functions. The findings demonstrate that the film is far more than a fantasy coming-of-age story; rather, it constructs a multilayered system of meaning in which identity is reconstructed through naming, memory, communication, and social relationships. Chihiro's transformation is interpreted not merely as a physical journey but as a narrative process of subjectivation toward identity reconstruction. Ultimately, the study concludes that the deep narrative structure of Spirited Away is organized around the interconnected concepts of name, memory, and identity, while subjectivation emerges through the interaction of narrative, structural, and semiotic processes.
