Between putti and roses - a touch of history

Abstract

The text ‘Between putti and roses’ by Brigitte von Holzing describes the historical and cultural significance of the manor house of the Barons von Holzing-Berstett in Bollschweil. The building, known as ‘House No. 84’ and immortalised in literature by Marie-Luise von Kaschnitz, is an 18th century baroque building constructed on the remains of a medieval moated castle. The article sheds light on the eventful history of the place, from the wealthy Snewlins and their connection to silver mines to the destruction of the castle during the Peasants' Wars and the passing of the property to various noble families, including the von Berstett family. The life stories of the residents, such as General Max Reinhard Freiherr von Holzing and his descendants, as well as the development of the garden and the fountain, provide an insight into the personal and historical dimension of the estate. The text impressively interweaves historical events, family history and the preservation of the house as a place of tranquillity and tradition. A poetic work by Kaschnitz accompanies the text and emphasises the connection between architecture, nature and history. The description shows the manor house as an important testimony to cultural continuity and the preservation of history.

“Putti ve Güller Arasında – Tarihin Hafif Esintisi”
