By exploring The Risale-i Nur, it becomes apparent that many topics address
issues of the West - such as Western modernity, Western Islamic dialogue, the
relation between the Islamic World and Western civil ity. The issu es of the
adoption and borrowing from others (i.e. the West) based on their modern
approach to civil ”progress“, in addition to other issues which come up in the
context of Islamic civil dialogue and Western modernity, are distributed (in brief
segments) extensively throughout the Risale-i Nur. The commentary delves into
such issues (previously tackled in a limited and general manner) with a high
degree of detail and comprehensibility.
In this paper, the author focuses on Nursi’s extensive approach in addressing
the Western issues, namely the modern Western model and its relation to the
Islamic world in terms of dialogue, exemplariness, and its construction.
As a result, adoption and borrowing from the other (the West) had to be
reviewed based on reform, which distinguishes between the benefit of aims and
effectiveness of methods. It also scrutinizes the reality of cultural and social
identity and the variables pertaining to changes of time and place. Even in the
case of borrowing from the West’s culture and civilization; only the technologies
perceived as useful as well as the modern sciences should be considered. This is
because while the West enjoys a civilization, the East still arguably boasts a
comprehensive and prospering Islamic civilization, historically surpassing that of
the West (since it stems from the Quran and remains directed by it).
Nonetheless, modernity and civil ity shall not be refused altogether as many
historians and scholars might think. On the contrary, it is simply a case of
avoiding the importation of modernity with all its philosophical and historical
baggage. Such an import of modernity ought to be refuted by sound thinkers,
who do not fall for the appealing traits and deceiving looks of modernity without
exploring its essence.
Nursi warns of the bl ind imitation of Western culture without reform or
discrimination, indicating that Western culture - which is often described as a
culture of mind, modernity and technology - is not absolute good. Nor is it the
ideal model for others to follow as an example without thorough examination, for it stands as a deficient and unjust civilization, a model which requires
criticism, reform, review and adjustment. This must be done in order to present
a model supported by morals and as an example to b e followed. Western
civilization ignores human beings, without whom no modernity nor civilization
can be built. On the other hand, it focuses on the mind, whereas a mind with no
ties to religion is the reason behind corruption of civilization, leading humanity
to insolence, aberrance and misery.
