The Value of the Flute in the 20 th Century Music and the Leading Peices of The Flute Repertoire

Abstract

The Flute became an instrument in the 20th century that received a lot of interest both by composers and performers which was as a result of inventions that changed timbral and techniqual possibilities of the instrument. The flute which was the most preferred instrument during 20thcentury music enlarged it’s repertoire that included a lot of extended flute techniques. In this article, four solo flute pieces namely C. Debussy – “Syrinx”, E. Varése – “Density 21.5”, L. Berio – “Sequenza” ve B. Ferneyhough – “Cassandra’s Dream Song” were researched and the usage of the extended techniques on 20th century solo flute music repertoire was also studied

Abstract

20. yüzyılda yapılan yenilikler sayesinde flüt, tını çeşitliliği ve teknik özellikleri bakımından, gerek besteciler gerek yorumcular açısından ilgi gören bir çalgı haline gelmiştir. 20. yüzyıl bestecilerinin en çok tercih ettiği çalgılardan biri olan flüt için yeni teknikler içeren pek çok eser bestelenmiştir. Bu çalışmada, 20. yüzyıl müziğinde öne çıkan dört solo flüt eseri; C. Debussy – “Syrinx”, E. Varése – “Density 21.5”, L. Berio – “Sequenza” ve B. Ferneyhough – “Cassandra’s Dream Song” incelenerek, yeni flüt tekniklerinin kullanımı ve 20. yüzyıl solo flüt repertuvarına etkileri ele alınmıştır
