ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND SPATIAL EVALUATION OF THE TRIAL EXCAVATIONS FROM THE AMISOS NECROPOLIS
Abstract
This study focuses on the archaeological evaluation of spatial data obtained from three different exploratory excavations conducted in 2005, 2010, and 2020 in the necropolis of the ancient city of Amisos (Samsun). The Amisos necropolis, beyond being merely a burial ground, exhibits an infrastructure related to the social and economic life of the city. The stone-paved road, water pools and channels with Khorasan mortar, drainage systems, and architectural wall remains unearthed during the excavations indicate that construction activities in the region continued from the Roman Imperial Period to the Early Byzantine Period. In particular, the 2020 data reveals the presence of workshops or waste areas around the necropolis, indicating tile production, thus supporting the idea that the area had a productive function. In conclusion, this data proves that the Amisos necropolis possessed a dynamic urban fabric combining burial rituals, transportation networks, and production activities.
