Evaluation of Vitamin D Levels in Prediabetic Patients
Abstract
Objectives: Prediabetes is a highly risky condition for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). In some of the cellular, preclinical and observational studies, it was shown that low vitamin D levels play role in the development of T2DM by affecting the synthesis and secretion of insulin. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the vitamin D levels in prediabetic patients.
Materials and methods: Forty-five prediabetic patients and 96 control subjects with an age range of 18-65 years were included to the study. Patients with other diseases were excluded. Physical examinations, arterial blood pressure measurements, and glucose and vitamin D levels were obtained after an 8 hour fasting period in our study population. Vitamin D levels were studied with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
Results: In all subjects of our study; there was a low significant inverse correlation between FPG and vitamin D levels (r=-0.332, p< 0.001). But a significant correlation wasn’t found between HbA1c and vitamin D levels. When the comparison between normoglycemic and prediabetic groups was performed, vitamin D levels were found significantly low in the prediabetic group (32.79±17.17 ng/ml vs 21.53±6.93 ng/ml, respectively).
Conclusion: Studies about the role of vitamin D deficiency in the development of prediabetes have increased in recent years. Effects of vitamin D in the prevention and management of T2DM have been shown in many studies. In the light of these studies, the factors which contribute to the development of T2DM gain more importance for the development of new treatment modalities.
