The Power of a Story: The Effect of a Storytelling Initiative in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on Milk Production in Mothers of Premature Infants – A Case Study

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of storytelling intervention on breast milk production in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Interactive care based on storytelling, given in addition to routine lactation support to a mother whose infant is hospitalized in the NICU and has insufficient milk production, was analyzed in light of the literature regarding lactation, maternal mood, and infant feeding success. It was found that the amount of milk secreted by the mother increased approximately 5-10 times on the 7th day after the practice of reading stories to the baby, the mother's stress decreased, and her desire to stay with her baby increased. The mother also expressed great satisfaction with the increased milk supply. In light of these findings, it is recommended that non-pharmacological interventions such as storytelling be included in family-centered care protocols and encouraged by healthcare professionals.

Bir Masalın Gücü: Yenidoğan Yoğun Bakım Ünitesinde Masal Okuma Girişiminin Anne Sütü Üretimine Etkisi – Bir Olgu Sunumu

Abstract

Bu çalışma Yenidoğan Yoğun Bakım Ünitesinde masal okuma girişiminin anne sütü üretimine etkisini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bebeği YYBÜ’de yatan ve süt salınımının yetersiz olan bir anneye rutin laktasyon desteklerine ek olarak verilen masal okuma temelli etkileşimsel bakımın, laktasyon, annenin duygu durumu ve bebeğin beslenme başarısı literatür ışığında analiz edilmiştir. Annenin salgıladığı süt miktarının, bebeğe masal okuma uygulaması sonrası 7. gününde yaklaşık 5- 10 kat arttığı, annenin stresinin azaldığı, bebeğinin yanında kalma isteğinin arttığı tespit edilmiştir. Aynı zamanda anne artan süt miktarından dolayı oldukça memnun olduğunu ifade etmiştir. Bu bulgular ışığında, masal okuma gibi non-farmakolojik müdahalelerin aile merkezli bakım protokollerine dahil edilmesi ve sağlık profesyonelleri tarafından teşvik edilmesi önerilmektedir.
