Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the decisions and attitudes of parents with children aged 5-12 years of age to vaccinate their children against COVID-19 due to their fear of COVID-19, and the factors affecting them.
Method: The cross-sectional study was conducted with 201 parents of children aged 5-12, selected by purposeful sampling method. Research data were obtained at a family health center in Istanbul between January 30 and March 1, 2022, using the self-report technique, through the Parents' Introduction Form, Coronavirus Fear Scale (CFS) and Attitudes Towards COVID-19 Vaccine Scale (ATCVS).
Results: 65.4% of mothers (n=89) and 50.8% of fathers (n=33) do not want to vaccinate their children and the difference is significant. ATCVS total, positive and negative attitudes sub-dimension of parents who want to vaccinate It was seen that their scores were statistically higher than those who did not want to be vaccinated, in other words, the attitudes of those who wanted to be vaccinated were positive (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Some socio-demographic characteristics of parents with children between the ages of 5-12, their fear of COVID-19 and their attitudes towards the vaccine influences the decision to vaccinate their children. When vaccination is required in this age group, family-specific information should be obtained by taking a careful anamnesis.
