Abstract

Fragments of a large vessel, dccoratcd with human figurcs in relief, were discovered on the mound of Bitik, 42 Kms. N.W. of An kara 1 and brought to the Archaeological Museum at Ankara by its late director, Professor Remzi Oğuz Arık. Engaged at the time in research in the Ankara region, he realised the importance of this discovery and started excavations on the Bitik mound in the sumnıer of 1942. The excavations showed that the mound had been occupied in the second millenniunı and that an important “Hittite” city had existed there in the centre of the fertile Murted plain
