The fragmentary basalt relief which forms the subject of this paper (Pl. GUI) was discovered in 1890 in Andaval, about ten kilo- meters northeast of Niğde in central Turkey. It was found by Ramsay in secondary use built into the floor of a Greek church, and together with Hogarth he published it in 1893 They only published a dra- wing based on an impression, and a Russian, Turaev, was the first to publish its photograph It was inciuded in Messerschmidt’s corpus * and the inscription was dealt with by Hrozny®. Gelb published it again introducing a new and better photograph (reproduced here in Pl. cni) which is kept in the Oriental Institute in Chicago ®. The whereabouts of the monument itself were not known to Gelb but he suggested that it might be in private possession in London.
