The Relationship of Family Functionality with Math Success in Primary School Second Grade Students

Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the relationship between the functionality of the family in which the student is included and the success in mathematics. The research was conducted with 167 students studying in the 7th and 8th classes within the 2019-2020 academic year. The data was collected through the "Introductory Characteristics Form," "Family Assessment Scale," and "Math Achievement Test." Mann-Whitney U, Anova, Kruskal Wallis, and Spearman correlation tests were conducted the identifying statistics in the analysis. SPSS 20.0 program was used in data analysis. The dimension with the maximum non-functionality was found as "showing the necessary interest" in the Family Assessment Scale." The median mathematics score of the students is 52 (min-max:1.76-96). Mathematics achievement scores of children whose fathers were officer were found to be higher (p<0.05). A negative-directed medium-strength significant correlation was detected between the whole sub-dimensions of the Family Assessment Scale and math achievement score. Education programs are required to be replanned to positively affect the perception of the family of the students. The skills of the individuals in the matters such as empathy and coping with stress, and domestic relationship management should be developed through the activities to be performed.
