The Effect of Early Maladaptive Schemas and Childhood Traumas on Romantic Relationship Satisfaction in Emerging Adults: The Mediating Role of Emotion Regulation Difficulty

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the mediating role of difficulty in emotion regulation in the effect of early maladaptive schemas and childhood traumas on romantic relationship satisfaction in emerging adults. Accordingly, 406 adult individuals were included in the study. The research was based on the relational screening model, which is one of the quantitative research methods, and the participants included in the research were determined by the purposive sampling method. Sociodemographic form, Childhood Trauma Scale, Young Schema Scale-Short Form 3, Relationship Satisfaction Scale, and Difficulty in Emotion Regulation Scale were presented to the participants in the study. The data collected in the research were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 package program. Before the analyzes were performed, it was checked whether the data set was normally distributed and it was determined that all research variables were normally distributed, except for the physical abuse and sexual harassment sub-dimensions of the Childhood Trauma Scale. Using multiple regression analysis, it was seen that disconnection and impaired autonomy schema domain had a significant predictive effect on relationship satisfaction. It was determined that difficulty in emotion regulation did not have a significant mediating effect in this predictive effect. The results obtained within the scope of the research were discussed within the framework of Turkish family structure, gender roles, attachment, psychometric characteristics and social desirability factors. In addition, various suggestions were made to researchers, clinicians and the government in the context of the research results.

Beliren Yetişkinlerde Erken Dönem Uyumsuz Şemalar ile Çocukluk Çağı Travmalarının Romantik İlişki Doyumu Üzerindeki Etkisi: Duygu Düzenleme Güçlüğünün Aracı Rolü

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı beliren yetişkinlerde erken dönem uyum bozucu şemalar ile çocukluk çağı travmalarının romantik ilişki doyumu üzerindeki etkisinde duygu düzenleme güçlüğünün aracı rolünü incelemektir. Bu doğrultuda araştırmaya 406 yetişkin birey dahil edilmiştir. Araştırmada nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden birisi olan ilişkisel tarama modeli kullanılmıştır ve araştırmaya dahil edilen katılımcılar amaçsal örnekleme yöntemi ile belirlenmiştir. Çalışmaya katılan kişilere sosyodemografik form, Çocukluk Çağı Travma Ölçeği, Young Şema Ölçeği-Kısa Form 3, İlişki Doyumu Ölçeği, Duygu Düzenleme Güçlüğü Ölçeği sunulmuştur. Araştırmada toplanan veriler SPSS paket programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Analizler gerçekleştirilmeden önce veri setinin normal dağılıp dağılmadığına bakılmış ve Çocukluk Çağı Travmaları Ölçeği’nin fiziksel taciz ve cinsel taciz alt boyutları dışında tüm araştırma değişkenlerinin normal dağıldığı saptanmıştır. Çoklu regresyon analizi kullanılarak yapılan analizde kopukluk ve zedelenmiş otonomi şema alanının ilişki doyumu üzerinde anlamlı bir yordayıcı etkisi olduğu görülmüştür. Duygu düzenleme güçlüğünün ise bu yordayıcılık etkisinde anlamlı bir aracılık etkisinin olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Araştırma kapsamında elde edilen sonuçlar Türk aile yapısı, toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri, bağlanma, psikometrik özellikler ve sosyal istenirlik faktörleri çerçevesinde tartışılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçları bağlamında araştırmacılara, klinisyenlere ve devlete çeşitli önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
